The Arts Centre Gold Coast and Bleach* present
The Surfer and the Mermaid

Following the success of its sell out premiere at the Bleach Festival in 2012 and its critically acclaimed 26 performance season at the Bondi Pavilion in Sydney. The Arts Centre Gold Coast in partnership with Connecting Southern Gold Coast and the Bleach Festival in 2013 will present the return season of The Surfer and the Mermaid.

Directed by Melinda Collie Holmes and starring Luke Townson as the Surfer, written and adapted for the stage by surf writer Tim Baker with images by surf photographer Ted Grambeau this is an extraordinary children’s piece with a powerful environmental message that will delight and inspire children and their parents.

Beachology Workshops
The ecology of sandy shores

These fun and hands-on workshops encourage kids to explore sandy shores through scientific activities, creating a passion for the coastal environment.

  • Discover the plants & animals that live in soft shores and their important roles in the coastal ecology
  • Learn the geological & tidal processes that create & shape our beaches & estuaries
  • Create deeper understandings of sandy shore processes and complex ecological interactions from the dunes to the waves
  • Learn scientific techniques such as specimen collection, sorting & handling, core sampling and microscope techniques

You never know what you might find!

All participants receive a Beachology Certificate and all groups receive a Beachology information booklet on our coastal environment.

Curriculum links: Sustainability, life cycles of organisms, ecosystems, data collection, processes of inquiry, care for the environment

Beachology workshops are available FREE to schools that make a group booking for The Surfer and the Mermaid.
