Often depicting Australian beach culture, Mark Gibbs' paintings can be seen as a comment on the idyllic existence in this great southern Utopia. Perhaps Aussies are all gods and goddesses! Gibbs’ work is a reflection of that great pastime of people-watching. Look closely and you’ll see stories from ancient literature played out again and again in our parks and on our beaches.

Gibbs takes a fresh look at the iconic masterpieces painted by Peter Paul Rubens in the early 17th century. In paying homage to his work he’s rediscovering Ruben’s insights into timeless grand archetypal narratives depicting gods and goddesses going about their various adventures. Those stories continue to be echoed in our everyday experiences.
