FACE UP: A Look at portraits from the collection

Gallery 1 July 16 - October 6, 2011
16 Jul - 28 Aug 2011

Artists can bring intensive scrutiny to our notions of identity. Drawn from our collection, this exhibition will feature portraits and figurative works that show how artists grapple with the creative challenge of finding visual representation of the individual. '

How does an artist present the identity of their subject within a work of art? Is it through the gaze, the physical gesture, the colour, the background, or the context of the subject?

This exhibition will include works by Davida Allen, Adam Cullen, Frank Hinder, Michael Kempson, Tracey Moffatt, John Olsen, John Perceval, Michael Zavros and many more.

Education Public Programs
A range of workshops and public programs will give high school students the chance to engage with portraiture as a means of self-expression. Using the works on display in the exhibition as a thematic springboard, students can work towards understanding and developing their sense of self and their place in the world.
